Unknown sculptor, Beheaded Saint John, Mons, Couvent des Sœurs Noires (UCL / FUCaM).
In 2021, an anonymous terracotta sculpture of the Beheaded Saint John was rediscovered during an inventory of the assets of the former Convent of the Black Sisters in Mons. Due to its remarkable aesthetic qualities and its unprecedented character, the authorities of UCL decided to examine the artwork with the aim of restoring it. The purpose of the preliminary study conducted by IRPA is to explore the sculpture from an art historical perspective, understand its material history by analyzing the materials and techniques used, and establish an accurate diagnosis of its state of conservation.
